* = not all numbers in series represented
At the turn of the century, Reading stopped numbering locomotives according to age, and devised a numbering system based on engine type. Each wheel arrangement was assigned a letter, and these were sub-divided by engines based on general dimensions, i.e. engines of the same weight, length and boiler dimension would share the same number. These basic classifications were further sub-divided with lower-case letters, with "s" denoting a superheated engine, and a, b, c, etc. denoting significant variations such as driver size changes. T-1s and G-3s did not recieve the "sa" classification because superheating was taken for granted by that time, and there were no subsequent variations expected.
